Attention fellow Gamers! The website Nintendo Age is publishing a new gaming Magazine called Retro. In the magazine, there will be articles, images, and other stuff all about retro games and current gen games. Nintendo Age is stating that they are trying to get back into the nostalgia we all felt reading old issues of Nintendo Power and other gaming magazines that we grew up with.
The website is now taking subscriptions for the new magazine and it will be a bi-monthly magazine which means there will be 6 issues a year. They are offering a Digital copy only subscription for $18 a year and a physical copy that also allows for a digital copy as well, in case you want to collect the magazines, and that one will be $33 a year. You can register for your subscription at the following website: https://checkout.subscriptiongenius.com/ReadRetro.com/nintendoage.com/
I will be subscribing to this new magazine myself and I hope other gamers both new and old will support Nintendo Age and do the same.

GVN Quick Review: Super Mario 3D World(Wii U)
Super Mario 3D World
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Nintendo
Genre: Platformer
Release: November 22, 2013
Super Mario 3D Land for the Nintendo 3DS was one of my favorite games on the mighty little handheld. It's wonderfully designed 3D environments used the 3D effect in ways I actually expected since the system launched. It contained lots of challenging platforming action that harkens back to the days of Super Mario 64 and even borrowing elements from the classic Super Mario Bros. 3 on the NES. Needless to say it was a smash hit.

Release: Sept 20th, 2013
Every now and again a game comes along that no matter what its about, it puts a smile on my face. Such is the case of the Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures for the PC. What we have here is a top notch balls-to-the-wall action platformer that along with several other platformers that I have played recently, that the 2D genre is thriving once more.

PS Vita! Finally something to play!
So I have had my PS Vita for I believe a little over a year now and finally I have found games to play that peak my interest. When I first invested in this handheld system I was excited because the PSP had some awesome games for it and I assumed that the Vita would follow suit. When the system released I purchased Uncharted and Modnation Racers and even though they are awesome games, I lost interest in the system quickly. Then Activision released Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified which I was hoping would give replay value of the Vita but once again I was disappointed because Black Ops Declassified was nothing like a Call of Duty game. Yes it was a FPS but didn't feel smooth to me. Needless to say after that horrible experience I put my Vita away and hadn't touched it until Killzone Mercenary was released. I waited about a month after the release to pick it up because I got it for cheap on a Black Friday deal. The game had me at the opening cinematic! The graphics were stunning and the controls were so precise that I didn't find having to use the touchscreen every once in a while for certain actions as that much of an inconvenience. It actually made the game a lot more enjoyable. The gameplay was smooth and the storyline kept you engaged and wanting to play more. Also Sony added a multiplayer experience on the Vita which ran smooth as well and gives the game a lot more replay value. I never thought I would ever play a multiplayer game on a handheld that didn't use Ad-Hoc like on the old PSP. I thought it would be choppy or lacking in graphics or having a lot of lag. But I was gladly mistaken. On top of Killzone Mercenary I picked up The Walking Dead: Complete First Season and Little Big Planet on the Vita and now I love the system. I hope that developers and Sony keep going forward with the Vita and produce more games that will be exclusive for the Vita but add some story to previous series that were released on the Playstation and such. What I mean is I would like a Resident Evil or Metal Gear Solid game that adds to the previous stories in the series but will only be available on the Vita. Kind of like what the did with Silent Hill.

DHGF Review: Blood of the Werewolf (PC)
"I have played some wonderful platformers these past couple of years. Among my recent favorites are the indie titles Fly’n, Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams and the Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures. I can say without a doubt that Blood of the Werewolf is now among them. Blood of the Werewolf is a phenomenal action platformer that has a great balance of difficulty, gameplay variance, precision, artistic style and atmosphere. Aside from a couple of minor complaints, Blood of the Werewolf is a solid gaming experience, and Scientifically Proven did a wonderful job with the first game in what I can hopefully call a promising franchise."

Gas Guzzlers Extreme
"Gas Guzzlers Extreme. The name alone should be warning enough that you are about to play a mediocre combat racing game trying to shove tons of the attitude and edgy-ness down your throat. Every kind of cliché you can image for an “extreme” racing game is here. Heavy metal music, lots of explosions, insane weaponry, ludicrously named tracks, inane one liners, and more. Despite all the cheesiness, Gas Guzzlers Extreme does offer you a decent worthwhile experience as a racing combat game but it just screams average in just about every other way imaginable."

Pokémon X / Y
Developer: Game FreakPublisher: Nintendo
Genre: RPG
Release: Oct 12th, 2013
I've had a fickle relationship with the Pokémon Franchise. I got Pokémon Blue along with my Gameboy Color for Christmas back in 1998. My siblings and I become heavily engrossed in the game and spent hundreds of hours on it. I continued with getting Pokémon Gold a couple years later and I will state that out of all the Pokémon games to date, it was the best of the bunch. I played the Pokémon games that released on the Gameboy Advance but they didn't captivate me as much as the first two.

Time and Eternitiy was something that was recommended to me, it is an untested series and may or may not have been worth the buy based simply on the information I had on the box. And while it isn't a perfect game there are a lot of small details that make it interesting enough to be worth picking up if you have the spare time and cash.

Diehard Gamefan Review: Montague's Mount (PC)
"I found out about Montague’s Mount through Steam’s Greenlight program and became incredibly interested in it. Montague’s Mount appeared to offer a very interesting setting, as well as some interesting puzzle solving and spooky survival horror looking elements. I wrote up a preview of Montague’s Mount not too long ago, though I failed to mention some of the game’s shortcomings and issues there because it was so close to the game’s release. I figured that most of those issues would have been ironed out by the game’s release, yet those issues and a few more were constant throughout the game."

Ducktales Remastered
Publisher: Capcom
Developer: Wayforward Technologies
Genre: Adventure
Release: Aug 13th, 2013(PSN, Wii U, Steam) Sept 11th, 2013 (XBLA)
As a child growing up, Ducktales and the rest of the Disney Afternoon shows, were ingrained in my mind. The cartoon was fun, adventurous and creative with memorable characters. To this day, I look back at this show with fondness. The original game was also stellar as well, doing a great job of adapting characters from the show and putting them into a well made platformer that required quite a bit of patience and memorization to beat.

"The Chaos Engine was one of the big hits released for Commodore Amiga computers back in 1993. It was quite a popular game and found itself being ported to various computers and consoles. The Chaos Engine was a steampunk themed action game that centered on Co-op play with either a friend or a CPU controlled ally."

GVN Radio will be returning this month
Towards the end of the summer, I took a small hiatus with GVN radio because of some scheduling conflicts preventing me and my co-hosts from having our bi-weekly podcast sessions. There was also a lot going on in terms of my main job, Summer Jam and my wedding anniversary that I'd rather spend more time focusing on. However all that has past and I will bring back GVN Radio. Hopefully, I can manage two episodes this month, if not at least one and resume out bi-monthly releases from then on.
Also on the agenda, I am working on a review of the Bitmap Brothers classic, Chaos Engine for Diehard Gamefan. I will have this review turned in hopefully by weeks end in time for next week's schedule. Aside from that I am looking forward to the release of Grand Theft Auto 5 and maybe even pick up Diablo 3 on Xbox 360 at some point. I also picked up the recently released Chaos Code and I might consider reviewing this unique anime fighting game.
Anyways, take care and keep on gaming.

GVN Review: Dead Or Alive 5 Ultimate (PS3/Xbox 360)
Dead Or Alive 5 Ultimate
Publisher: Tecmo Koei
Developer: Team Ninja
Release: September 3rd, 2013
It's been almost a year ago that Team Ninja released Dead Or Alive 5 to the masses. It's been almost 7 years plus since the console release of Dead Or Alive 4, which graced the Xbox 360 as an exclusive title nearly missing the launch window. Since then there was not a peep about a sequel for many years because Mr. Itagaki considered DOA4 his opus to the fighting game world. In the quiet time since the last iteration's release, we have seen multiple releases and ports in the Ninja Gaiden franchise and Tecmo merging with Koei. It wasn't until Hayashi (Itagaki's protégé), took the helm of Team Ninja development, that a new DOA game would be released. What we received was Dead Or Alive Dimensions, a Nintendo 3DS exclusive, which was created as a means to test the waters to see if the franchise still had viability.

Diehard Gamefan Review: Disney Planes (Wii)
Well tickle me surprised; I did not expect Disney Planes to actually be a good game. I have seen the movie with my son recently, and I walked away with the impression that it was an okay underdog family movie. Definitely not one of Disney’s best efforts, honestly, because they were trying to cash in on the overwhelming success of the Cars franchise with this spinoff. Now, as most cash-in game properties go with Disney these days, they tend to range from below average to horrible. So you can imagine my surprise when I popped in Disney Planes for the Nintendo Wii and found an experience that I think would be worthwhile for the entire family to play.

Game Rants: JRPG battle systems
The JRPG genre is one of my favorite genres. Well written stories and/or characters (Yes, it is possible to have a bad plot but good characters.), strategic battle systems, and great music all are huge draws for me to the genre. While a good writing can make me want to get to the end of a game, the battle system is what dictates whether it is actually fun to get from one piece of story to another. Unfortunately, some games have absolutely abysmal battle systems which detract from the experience.

GVN Quick Review: The Last Of Us (Playstation 3)
The Last Of Us
Publisher: Sony
Developer: Naughty Dog
Released: June 14th, 2013
The Last Of Us is clearly one of the most ambitious and daring games to have come out this year. The whole element of the game centered completely on the relationship of our two antagonists Joel and Ellie, and how the bond between the two would grow as the game progresses. The Last Of Us' story covers the span of a little over a year and in that time we see Joel and Ellie's bond and it manages to make us connect with these characters in a way that would make major motion picture studios jealous. As you progress you see the issue of morality and what you feel you need to do in order to survive as it weighs heavily on Joel and especially Ellie.

Diehard Gamefan Review: Company Of Heroes 2
Here's my latest review over at Diehard Gamefan. Company of Heroes 2 for the pc.
"After I finally played the original StarCraft to death, I finally went out of my way to play many other types of RTS games. Some of the games I went through included Command And Conquer Generals, WarCraft 3, Rise Of Nations: Rise of Legends, and the first Company of Heroes. The first Company Of Heroes came out way back in 2005 and at the time, was a breathe of fresh air from the huge amount of RTS that were being released. It mostly focused more on commanding platoons of troops of using cover based tactics for the majority of the game along with use of infantry weapons, vehicles and the like. It was a fun and different experience from all the sci-fi and fantasy strategy games that were everywhere in the mid 2000′s."

GVN Review: Remember Me
Developer: Dontnod Entertainment
Publisher: Capcom
Released: June 4th, 2013
Remember Me is quite possibly one of the most stylish and unique game that I have experienced in quite some time. Remember me finally caught my attention when I saw gameplay footage that was released by Dontnod, the game's developer. What they created was a game that involved a good balance of combat mixed in with platforming in a game with a setting similar to a cyber punk, Bladerunner setting. Remember Me has amazing graphics, excellent voice acting, a beautiful world, and a good combat system all rolled up together. However it is marred by some small hindrances like questionable controls, limited immersive experience, an inconsistent character driven plot, game length and little replay value.

Diehard Gamefan Review: Sanctum 2(XBLA)
A new review is up from me over at Diehard Gamefan.
"I never played or read up much on the first Sanctum when it released back in 2011. I have never been a big fan of the tower defense genre of games. For whatever reason the concept, though novel, just never clicked with me. So when Sanctum 2 was released I decided to look into it. The idea of creating a hybrid genre by mixing it with a first person shooter setting merited me to play it. To my amazement I was surprised by how well the two genres can work together. Does Sanctum 2 offer me enough variety to keep me hooked and playing?"

GVN Review - Resident Evil: Revelations (PC)
Notice: This review does not discuss the multiplayer mode
This is my first Resident Evil game that I've played extensively in quite some time. I played part 4 heavily but never beat it, Part 5 made me bitter and felt like the series was loosing it's charm, and part 6 I didn't bother to pick up. I played the demo of Revelations when it became available on the 3DS and found it quite impressive but sadly I passed it up on release day because the reaction heavy gameplay didn't feel right on a handheld to me.
Some time later, Capcom decided to port it to consoles and PCs and I was honestly very excited. Resident Evil Revelations received quite a graphical upgrade and had some gameplay mechanic tweaks since it was moved off the touchscreen handheld. The scare and panic factor also makes their return, which has been missing since Code Veronica returning the franchise to it's survival horror roots. So how well does the newest Resident Evil game compare after being released after the lukewarm reception of part 6?

GVN Quick Review: Bioshock Infinite (PC)
It is very difficult for me to sit here and write a review about a great game which has been out for over a month and come up with something that hasn't been already said. So needless to say I am going to add to the praise that Bioshock Infinite has garnered since it's release. From beginning to end, Bioshock Infinite is quite possibly one of the greatest highlights of gaming in the past 10 years. Everything from the run and gun aesthetics, the story progression and the unique world ripe for exploration has exceeded all of my expectations.

Diehard Gamefan Review: Evoland (PC)
My latest review is live over at Diehard Gamefan for the nostalgia trip, Evoland. How is the game that tries to make you play through the evolution of the genre?
"Evoland is a little indie title that chronicles the evolution of the Japanese RPG genre from the monochrome days of the Gameboy to the high resolution days of today. To call it a game is slightly misleading, as the game is more of an experience of how games have advanced in the last 25 years. Evoland‘s beginning is rather odd to begin with. Unlike games like 3D Dot Game Heroes or Half Minute Hero, which provide a full gaming experience in the guise of a retro themed game, Evoland merely provides us with an incredibly short trip that plays strongly to nostalgia."

GVN Review: Etrian Odyssey IV
Potential Spoilers, you have been warned.
I first got into the Etrian Odyssey series about a year or so ago when I picked up EO III. I had been wanting to play it for a while but never really got a chance to before then. I wanted to play a turn based RPG and that's what I got.

GVN Review: Tomb Raider (PC)
As one might have expected from me,
I was extremely pumped as well as apprehensive to play the new Tomb Raider
reboot. After voicing my thoughts on the franchise along with some
friends in a documentary styled video mini-series, I was not shy in mentioning
my concerns about the reboot. My fear of the game being nothing more than
a torture porn fest as we watch Lara Croft getting beaten and battered as she
learns to survive in a brand new origin story was something I was truly
concerned with. Thankfully throughout the game that wasn't the case
although Lara still does get quite roughed up throughout her journey. So
how well did the new Tomb Raider go about giving birth to a new Lara Croft?

GVN Review: Atelier Ayesha - The Alchemist of Dusk (PS3)
Atelier Ayesha is the second game in the fabled franchise I have played. My first being the unexpectedly good Atelier Meruru. Atelier Ayesha is now the 14th console release of the long running series and begins a brand new adventure following the heroic fumbling's of our protagonist, Ayesha Altugle. It is unsure if Ayesha is the beginnings of another trilogy but with the way the series has been going you can bet your money it is. So what remains to be seen however is if Atelier Ayesha is worthy of living up to the name of the franchise.

GVN Review: Fire Emblem: Awakening
Potential Spoilers, you have been warned.
The Fire Emblem series has produced many hours of fun for me and it's been interesting to
watch the series evolve. Awakening has been the third installment that I've played, with the
other two being the GBA games. I never did play the DS version for some reason, but I
should probably get to it at some point. Suffice to say, I am not a stranger to this series and I
have beaten both GBA versions at some point and am in the process of beating Awakening (as
much as real life and apathy are trying to prevent me from doing so).

Diehard Gamefan Review: Vampire Crystals
Finally got another review up for Diehard Gamefan. This time for a little WiiWare arcade title called Vampire Crystals. Check it out.
"Vampire Crystals is a little gem that came out just before Christmas, at a time when many people were pouring their bank accounts into the annual Steam sale. This is a shame because Vampire Crystals is definitely a fun little romp for your Nintendo Wii. Vampire Crystals is a small WiiWare title from the minds at Shanblue Interactive that doesn’t hide its heavy influences from Smash TV. It’s a straight forward run and gun action arcade title that up to four people can play together and provide a good chunk of fun even with its flaws."

Diehard Gamefan Review: Primordia (PC)
I wrote a brand new review over at diehard gamefan. This time its a point and click adventure game by the name of Primordia. Check it out.
http://diehardgamefan.com/2012/12/31/review-primordia-pc/
"I am excited about the resurgence of the Point and Click adventure genre. The genre seemed to have died off at the end of the 1990′s and was apparently no longer relevant in PC gaming, but thanks to a strong catalog of games and several studious, both big company and independent, this has allowed the light to be shined upon them once again. Great games like the new Sam and Max, Machinarium and Back to the Future have reignited interested in the long dormant genre. Now, we have a new entry in Primordia, which is brought to us by the indie company Wormwood Studios."
